Longueval and Delville Wood
The South Africans, caught by ferocious fire and cut off within the woods, fought almost to the last man. Of the 4,000 men involved in the battle, only 143 remained physically unscathed when relief came. The memorial consists of a triumphal arch and bronze sculptures of Castor and Pollux, while behind this is a replica of the castle in Capetown; it contains a museum. | ||||||||||||||
