Thiepval Memorial
The village of Thiepval was obliterated and was one of the key points in the German defences known as the Leipzig salient. It was a principal point of the July 1st disaster and is commemorated with a major memorial to the 73,412 British and South Africans who fell here. Their names are engraved on the 16 columns which form the base of the structure. A French-British cemetery lies behind the memorial.
